Abstract

264,950. Plummer, C. St. C., and Kermode, W. M. Nov. 7, 1925. Packing, metallic.-In an expansion joint between a steam pipe and a turbine casing &c., provided with stuffing-boxes 12, 13 respectively adapted to receive the ends of a pipe 11, and secured together by bolts 25, each stuffing-box comprises a pair of partly spherical bushes 15, 20 and coacting spherical cups 16, 18, containing metallic packing-rings 17, the contacting surfaces between said cups and packing rings being substantially conical. Springs 21, in housings 22 are interposed between the two sets of packing- rings, while a steam pipe 23, for warming the packing, and a drain pipe 24 may be added. A clearance space 14 is provided between the end of the pipe 11 and the stuffing box. A longitudinal clearance may be left between the casing 13 and the outer surface of the bush 15, in which case a soft packing 26 is provided, while lateral movement of the pipe 11 is arranged for by a clearance space 31. In a modification, the rings are in halves and the outer rings only are conical on their outer edge to engage with a conical portion of the cup member.
