Packing, metallic; heating; boxes.-In an expansion union for pipes comprising an outer casing 1, Fig. 1, enclosing an internal tubular element 4, fluid tightness is secured by a number of groups of split metal packing rings 6 - - 9, which are housed between said members 1, 4, pressed axially by springs 15 in one direction against fixed bearing surfaces such as 16, 20 and by a stuffing box 25 acting oppositely thereto. If desired a similar group of metal packing rings may be provided in conjunction with the adjustable packing 25 adapted to act in the same direction thereas. The rings 6, 9 are arranged within spring rings 10, 10 which are themselves held within circular cups 12, 13, while spherical surfaced rings 14, 18 are positioned between the groups of packing rings and the bearing surfaces 16, 20. Steam connections 21, 28, 29 and corresponding drain connections 22, 30, 31 are preferably provided as shown for preliminary heating of the packing rings. In a modification the spherical rings 14, 18 and surfaces 16, 20 are omitted from the outwardly acting groups of packing rings while opposite inward pressure is applied to conical metallic rings 36. A further modification is shown in Fig. 2.
