Abstract

263,332. Mooney, J. D. Feb. 9, 1926. Actuated or applied by driving-mechanism disengagers; band; energy-absorbing elements.-Reversing-gearing suitable for marine propulsion comprises a brake drum 17, which slides on a planet-carrying casing 8 to actuate a plate clutch 14 for solid forward driving, and which is held by a brake 41 for reversed driving. Upon the meeting surfaces of the drum 17 and brake band 41 are spiral grooves 17<b>, 41<a> which coact with lubricating oil in such a way as to help to withdraw the drum 17 to the right and disengage the clutch. The band 41 is supported at one end on a pivot 42, Fig. 2, and is normally held open clear of the drum 17 bv a spring 50. A tongue 41<c> about the middle of band is threaded on a supporting bolt 45<a> and is held down on a shoulder 45 by a spring 46. The band is tightened on the drum by thrust in a plunger 51. A control lever 31 through an arm 28 actuates the clutch control sleeve 26, and through a, cam 56, lever 52, and adjustable connection 54 operates the brake plunger 51.
