Abstract

Magnetic instruments.-In a transmitter or receiver of the electrodynamic type, a conducting coil 6 carried by a flexible diaphragm 7 is mounted in a magnetic field so that it vibrates in two lateral portions about a stationary diametrical portion, the two portions cutting the magnetic field. An outer magnetic pole is formed by a ring 5 seated in the open end of a pot electromagnet and having a step-shaped inner periphery, and an inner magnetic pole is formed by a removable end portion 2b of a central core 2 of the electromagnet. The upper part of the outer magnetic pole is recessed at opposite diametrical parts 5a, 5b to form two segmental polar tips 5<c>, 5d, and the inner magnetic pole has a lateral annular flange 2a, the coil being located in the space between the polar tips. The flexible diaphragm bears against the inner side of the segmental and annular polar tips and is supported by a rigid ring 8 having a diametrical rib, and two diametrically arranged radial strips 9, 9a bear against the coil opposite the rib. The parts are clamped between inner and outer plates 10, 11, the latter of which has openings 11<a> opposite the coil to admit sound waves. The radial strips are of hard material, such as fibre or metal, or of soft yielding or resilient material, such as rubber. The ends of the coil are connected to the input terminals of a thermionicvalve amplifying-apparatus, such as described in Specification 266,029, [Class 40 (v), Wireless signalling &c.], and a point of substantially balanced potential, for example the central point of a single layer coil or the junction point between two layers, is connected to the earthed pole of the current-supply system of the amplifying-apparatus.
