Abstract

238,945. Brown, S. G. May 27, 1924. Diaphragms.-A vibrating element, more particularly for microphones, telephone receivers, and gramophones, comprises a double diaphragm of thin metal in which the interior is open to the atmosphere and one face only is rigidly attached, the attachment being about the centre of that face. One face is caused to vibrate, the other face being fixed about its centre to a casing and having a hole communicating with the atmosphere through the casing. As shown, the faces a, b each have a conical portion and a flat annular portion, their peripheries being united by spinning, welding, &c. The conical portions point in the same direction and the air space between the faces is of uniform thickness. Grooves k may be provided to increase flexibility. In applying the diaphragm to a loud-speaker, a flat portion on the face b is attached to a vibrating reed l, Fig. 4, and a flange f around a central aperture in the face a is fitted tightly within an inwardly projecting portion n of the base-plate m carrying the horn. As applied to a telephone receiver or as a modification of the loud-speaker mounting, the flanged central aperture in the face a is secured' by a collar in a central opening in a disc-like member, the periphery of which is secured against a cylindrical member or sleeve in the casing of the receiver or by a screwed cap or ear-piece. The diaphragm may be made of material otherthan metal.
