Abstract

406,749. Loud - speakers. MIDGLEY, A. H., c/o Midgley, Harmer, Ltd., Dukes Road, Western Avenue, North Acton, London. Sept. 8, 1932, No. 25085. [Class 40 (iv).] A sound reproducing or a sound recording or transmitting device comprises a flat and preferably stretched diaphragm provided with two or more concentric moving coils which are immersed in annular gaps of a common magnetic field system, each coil being arranged to generate, or to be sensitive to, different modes of vibration of the diaphragm according to the frequency impressed thereon. The Figure shows a construction of loud-speaker comprising a flat diaphragm c driven by concentric coils a, b located in the gaps of a common magnet system d, e, f, the centres of the coils coinciding with the centre of the diaphragm as shown or being displaced therefrom by any distance up to about 1/5 of the radius of the diaphragm. The coil a is preferably wound with aluminium wire and the coil b with copper wire, the two coils being connected in series and an inductance is connected across coil a and a capacity across coil b so that the high frequencies are diverted through coil a but do not traverse coil b. The diaphragm c, which may be in the form of a disc or have a square or oblong outline, is mounted as described in Specification 332,272, [Class 40 (iv)], by stretching it over or fixing its periphery to a ring or rings g movably supported on three studs h. The holes in the rings through which the studs pass are preferably bushed with leather, felt &c. i while felt rings or stops l may be provided on the studs to limit the movement of the rings thereon. The arrangement is such that at low frequencies the diaphragm and inertia weight will vibrate as a whole, but at the higher frequencies only the centre of the diaphragm will vibrate. The magnet system may be provided with vent holes as shown.
