Lift valves; actuating-mechanism.-In a closing device or valve, according to the parent Specification, the strap-shaped member g, Figs. 1 and 2, surrounding the elastic annual member or pad b is provided with means by which it can be displaced relatively to the annular pad without previously pressing the pad inwardly by hand, so that the valve f can be opened to any required extent and held open. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 the adjustment takes the form of an eccentric or roller h mounted in a recess in the pad band rotated by a handle k. Moreover, the strap g is removable. In the form shown in Fig. 2 the strap g is fitted with a block or tumbler p having three facets 1, 2, 3 disposed at progressively-increasing distances from the pivot centre q. In the closed position the facet 1 rests in a recess in the pad b, as shown. The tumbler p is turned by the handle o to bring the facets 2 and 3 into contact with the pad b to obtain a progressively-increasing compression of the pad and consequent variable opening of the valve.
