Apparatus for making filaments; cellulose xanthates, processes for making filaments from.-Artificial silk comprising filaments having in their substance minute cavities is made by forming bubbles of gas in the viscose solution to b.e spun by electrolysis immediately before spinning. The electrolysis may take place at the spinning nozzle; thus, in the construction shown, the electrodes consist of rings b, c separated by a ring e of insulating material, the former carrying points f arranged opposite to and in advance of the spinning orifices d. The bubbles of gas originating at the points f mix with the solution as it passes through the orifices. The oxygen given off at the anode may be partly or entirely consumed in oxidizing the sulphur compounds in the viscose, whereby the objection. able production of sulphuretted hydrogen during spinning is reduced.
