260,068. Thompson, W., and Marsh, G. Aug. 13, 1925. Ellipsographs.-An instrument for drawing or cutting-out ellipses &c. comprises two rules 13, 14 at right-angles to each other, a rule. 17 which can slide on either of the rules 13, 14, and slides 1, 2 adapted to slide in any of the rules and carrying pivotal members through which passes an arm 19 carrying the marking or cutting means 20. Fig. 4 shows the slide 2, on which is pivoted a guide 3 within which is loosely mounted a block 4 provided with a screw 5 and lock-nut 6 and having an aperture 7 through which the arm 19 is passed. The slide 2 and block 3 are provided with pointers 10, 9 respectively, co-operating with scales on the rules and arm. Rollers 11 carried by the slide run on tracks 12 in the rules, which are also provided with grooves 15 to receive the slides. The slides can be clamped to the rules by screws 16, and' the rule 17 can also be clamped to either of the rules 13, 14 by a screw 18. By means of the instrument a portion of an ellipse or an arc of a circle can be drawn and combined with a portion of another ellipse or an arc of a circle. By fixing one of the slides 1, 2, the instrument can be used as a beam compass.
