Abstract
258,885. Braun, A. Sept. 23, 1925, [Convention date.]. Regulating transformers. -A regulating transformer comprises a primary winding c embracing a core which is divided into two or more sections a<1>, a<2> which may have the same or different reluctance values, and a secondary winding so arranged with respect to the core sections that the voltage produced therein may be regulated bv means of auxiliary windings adapted to distribute the flux in any desired ratio between the core sections. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the secondary winding comprises two oppositely wound series connected coils d<1>, d<2> arranged one on each of the core sections a<1>, a<2>. The regulating winding comprises coils f<1>, f<2> arranged as shown so that by changing the connection from series to parallel, varying the number of turns, and short circuiting one or other of the coils, the flux may be distributed as desired between the core sections to vary the secondary voltage. The range of variation may be increased by coupling the coils f<1>, f<2> through a transformer or auto-transformer of variable ratio; or resistances, reactance coils, or condensers may be inserted in the circuit of the regulating winding. In a modification the secondary winding consists of a single coil embracing one of the core sections. In a further form, Fig. 3. the secondary winding comprises coils d<1>, d<2> d3 disposed on the core section a<2>, and regulating windings f<1>, f<2>, g<1>, g<2>, l<1>, l<2> whereby regulation is effected by directing the flux either wholly through the section a<1>, through a part of the section a<2> and across one or other of the magnetic bridge pieces h<1>, h<2>, or wholly through the section a<2>. According to a further arrangement, the secondary winding is arranged on a magnetic bridge piece between two core sections and the direction of flux in the bridge piece is controlled bv regulating windings arranged above and below the bridge piece on the two core sections.
