Abstract
257,314. Heckman, H. C. April 28, 1925. Driving-gear; two-stroke-cycle engines.-Pistons 57, 58 reciprocate within cylinders 33, 34, which themselves reciprocate in stationary cylinders 1, 2. Combustion takes place between the moving pistons and cylinders, the space enclosed between the fixed and moving cylinder ends being used to compress the charge. Power is transmitted to the crank shaft from the cylinders 33, 34 through the medium of interengaging rollers and grooves. In an engine having horizontallyopposed cylinders, stationary cylinders 1, 2 are provided with threaded holes 9 for sparking plugs, and passages 10, 11 for the admission of mixture by way of inlet valves 12, 13 actuated by the cam 29 on the crank shaft 4. Exhaust ports 30, 31 are also provided in the cylinders 1, 2, and transfer passages 32, 32<a> are arranged near their outer ends. One of the transfer passages of each of the sets 32, 32a may be made 1/32 in. longer than the others. The movable cylinders 33, 34 are formed with admission ports 53 which also serve as ignition ports when they pass the plugs in the openings 9, and with exhaust ports 56. An intermediate member 35, divided longitudinally, connects the cylinders 33, 34 its two halves being bolted together so that the ends engage the grooves 36. Each half of the member 35 is formed with an elliptical groove 40, 41 and a transverse groove 42, 43. Rollers 62, 63 carried by the crank discs 46 engage the grooves 40, 41 and rollers 44, 45, diametrically opposed to the rollers 62, 63, work in the transverse grooves 42, 43. By setting the rollers 62, 63 at 26‹ in advance of the crank-pin 61 the introduction of a dead centre is avoided.
