Rotary furnaces.-In a rotary furnace ior roasting zinc blende &c., a number of chamb e r s substantially parallel to the axis are connected at their ends in such a way that the chambers successively traversed by the material lie at different distances irom the. centre in some desired order, e.g. successive chambers may lie on a spiral path directed towards or from the centre, the arrangement being always such that heat generated in the pre-roasting phase is available as make-up heat in the final roasting. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement in which the chambers are all in series, inlet being at a peripheral chamber 1, and final roasting being effected in the central chambers k, l. Air supply heated in internal channels e follows the reverse direction. Chambers connected in parallel may also be employed.
