Abstract
254,762. Johnson, W. Feb. 6, 1925. Alloys. - Stainless or rustless irons or steels containing for example 8-25 per cent of chromium, 0.01-2.5 per cent of carbon, 0.05-5 per cent of manganese, and 0.05-3.5 per cent of silicon, with or without other metals such as nickel, tungsten, cobalt, and molybdenum, are made by adding a reducible mixture consisting of chrome ore and aluminium, silicon, or other exothermic reducing agent, and preheated to 350-1550‹ C., to a slag on an underlying bath of metal in an open-hearth furnace, the slag containing lime to the amount of 12-20 per cent or more of the metal being melted and iron oxide to the amount of 3-20 per cent of the chrome ore used in the reducible mixture. Caustic soda, soda ash or the like may be added to the slag or to the reducible mixture. In a modification, a melt of metal may be made with the usual amount of slag, and the relative bulk of slag to metal afterwards adjusted by withdrawing some of the metal prior to the addition of the reducible mixture to the slag.
