Abstract
236,739. Hamilton, W. B., and Reid, F. July 29, 1924. Dry processes of extracting refractory and other metals; alloys. - Metal oxides, such as ores of chromium, tungsten, nickel, manganese, &c., are reduced by forming on the top of a bath of molten metal a reception slag containing silica, and adding to the slag the oxide to be reduced and carbon, the carbon serving to set free from the silica silicon to reduce the metal oxide. Further charges of oxide and carbon may be added from time to time. For example, for the production of an iron-chromium alloy, iron may be melted, and, after removal of the slag first formed, a reception slag composed of lime, fluorspar, and sand may be formed on the molten iron bath; chromite is then added to the slag, and afterwards carbon in successive small quantities, the chromium which is produced descending into the iron bath. Specification 211,210 is referred to.
