Abstract

A process for the manufacture of corrosion-resisting chromium steels in which a chromium-containing iron bath is refined to decrease the carbon content and the chromium content is increased by reduction of the chromium oxide in the slag, is conducted in an induction furnace. The reducing agent may be ferrosilicon with ferromanganese, aluminium, calcium silicide, &c. The slag may be stiffened during the refining stage by the addition of glass &c., to avoid contact with atmospheric oxygen, and titanium may be added to remove nitrogen. The process may also be carried out by adding a highly carburized iron chromium alloy to a low carbon iron bath after which follows the increasing of the chromium content of the bath. Alloying elements, such as nickel, cobalt, titanium, aluminium, and silicon, may be added after reducing the chromic oxide, while oxides of metals such as tungsten, molybdenum, and manganese may be added to the slag to be reduced with the chromium.
