Abstract
In a method of making rustless or stainless iron in an electric are furnace by melting down a charge consisting principally of chromium-containing rustless scrap and an oxidizing-agent to form an iron bath containing chromium and a blanket of slag containing the oxides of iron and chromium and then reducing the chromium oxide contained in the slag, the reducing-agent used is one containing combined chromium such as ferrochrome silicon. The melting of the charge is performed continuously and the reducing agent is added while the metal and slag are at a temperature of super-heat e.g. 3050-3200 DEG F. The oxidizing agent used may by iron oxide in the form of roll scale or magnetic iron ore concentrate and the furnace is provided with a chromite lining. Instead of ferrochrome silicon reducing agents containing combined chromium and aluminium or magnesium or compositions including one or more of such agents may be employed. The rustless irons prepared usually contain 12-20 per cent or more of chromium and ,05-,15 of carbon, and may also contain up to 20 per cent of nickel, up to 5 of copper molybdenum and tungsten and up to 2 of vanadium. Chrome ore may be added along with the reducing-agent.
