Abstract
201,520. Berlin, D. W. July 26, 1922, [Convention date]. Alloys of iron and another metal, such as chromium, manganese, tungsten, and molybdenum, are obtained by forming electrodes of a mixture comprising an ore containing the metal, an exothermic reducing agent such as silicon, silicon-aluminium, and alloys thereof, and binding agents such as water glass, magnesium chloride and clay, the electrodes being coupled together in an electric furnace, either alone or in the presence of molten metal or slag. Rods or tubes of iron may be embedded in the electrodes. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes the production of rustless steel containing 15 per cent chromium by melting iron chippings in a furnace having carbon electrodes, iron ore being added to obtain the correct percentage of carbon. The final melting is then effected by means of electrodes formed of chromium oxide, iron ore and a reducing agent, chromium oxide, ferro-chromium or iron being added directly if the temperature becomes excessive. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
