Abstract

A silicon-free steel, poor in carbon, resistant to rusting and corrosion, contains 0,1-1 per cent of chromium, 0,25-0,5 per cent of copper, 0,04-0,25 per cent of nickel and 0,01-0,05 per cent of tungsten. In producing the steel a charge is smelted in a Siemens-Martin furnace comprising Martin pig-iron, a special pig iron containing up to 0,1 per cent only of phosphorus and scrap iron with the usual addition of lime. Decarburizing additions of iron oxide, for example slag or scale in quantities of 0,4-0,5 per cent of the metallic charge are made to bring down the carbon to 0,03 per cent. After degassing the charge by additions of, for example, ferromanganese or aluminium, the alloying is carried out by the addition of a ledeburitic carbidic alloy free from graphite and containing approximately 2,5-3 per cent of carbon, 20-30 per cent of chromium, 6-10 per cent of nickel, 10-15 per cent of copper, 5-6 per cent of tungsten, the remainder being iron free from manganese, silicon and phosphorus.
