Abstract

Wool-fat, purifying; lubricants for machinery. - In the purification of wool fat and " Yorkshire brown grease " by alkali, emulsification is reduced by effecting the saponification of the fatty acids in stages, and removing the soaps after each stage. Sodium peroxide or sodium perborate or other persalt may constitute part of the alkali so that the wool fat is bleached. In an example, 1.5 cwt. of " white concentrate " is boiled for 10 minutes with 60 gallons of water, cooled to 45‹ C. by addition of 90 gallons of water, treated with a solution of 12 oz, of sodium peroxide in 3 gallons of water, allowed to stand for 12 hrs.. boiled, the grease allowed to rise, and the aqueous portion centrifuged. The total grease is washed by boiling with 150 gallons of water, and separated as before. It is then mixed with <2>/3 its bulk of water treated at 46‹ C. with an aqueous solution of 10 oz. of sodium peroxide, allowed to stand for 12 hrs., diluted with 50 gallons of water, and boiled. The grease is separated by decantation, centrifuging and washing as before. The wool-fat mav be dissolved in a volatile solvent to produce a rust preventative of the kind described in Specification 163,474, or mixed with mineral lubricating oils as described in Specification 7845/26.
