Variable-speed ratchet gearing comprises a spring link or connecting-rod B which yields so as to render the speed ratio automatically variable according to the load. A driving-shaft A carries a crank or eccentric A<1> connected by the link B to a loose arm or frame F, which carries two oppositely-directed spring pawls e<1>, e2. The pawl e<2> engages a ratchet wheel C fast on the driven shaft C<1>. The pawl e<1> engages ratchet teeth D in a fixed casing. For light loads the arm F and ratchet C are carried round with the crank, turn for turn. When the load is so great that the crank will extend the spring and pass its lower dead centre, there is lostmotion, but a driving impulse in the direction of the arrow is imparted to the ratchet C. The amount of lost-motion increases with the load, the speed of the driven shaft decreases. When the crank has passed the dead centre, the arm F is kept by the pawl e<1> from moving rearwardly, and the energy stored in the spring B is restored to the driving-shaft. A plurality of such gear units in multiple phase may be employed.
