Rotary sieves. - In apparatus for screening coal, ores and other dry materials such as agricultural produce, of the type comprising a series of screens a, a<1> mounted on a vertical shaft b to which rotary and vertical reciprocating movements are imparted, the vertical reciprocating movements are positively controlled in both directions and their amplitude and speed are adjustable independently of each other during the operation of the machine. In the construction shown, the vertical shaft b is mounted by means of a ball-and-socket bearing l in the strap m of an adjustable eccentric on the shaft p independently actuated through gearing by a motor n. The adjustable eccentric comprises an inclined part of the shaft and an endways movable sleeve fitting this part of the shaft p and adjusted by a fork r and spindle s. Other means for producing the reciprocating movements are referred to and comprise pneumatic devices, electric solenoids, and rotating cams acting on rollers or brackets carried by the shaft b. The shaft is rotated by a motor c, shaft d, worm e and short vertical shaft f connected to the shaft b by a flexible coupling g. The material is fed by centrifugal action across the screens, the concavity of which may be adjusted by providing on the shaft pairs of bosses, on of each pair being fixed and carrying the radial struts and outer rim of the screens and the other carrying the centre of the screens and being adjustable by stretcher bolts. The shoot's X for discharging the various components may be provided with hinged parts to allow access to the working parts.
