Abstract

250,260. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Hall, C. 1.). April 4, 1925, [Convention date]. Selective distant control systems. -Thermal switches are placed in tuned circuits so as to be operated by currents of a particular frequency only. The thermal switch is preferably a bimetallic one comprising brass and nickel steel strips which are heated mainly by the eddy current and hysteresis effect produced by the alternating current in a coil surrounding the strips. Fig. 2 shows two such bimetallic strips 10, 11 provided with coils 12, 13 and adapted to tip a mercury switch 15 into the " off " or " on " position according to which coil is energized. Additional bimetallic strips 21, 22 are also provided to compensate for variations of surrounding temperature. The arrangement is shown in a system for lighting lamps 37 &c. by means of a three-phase supply from a generator 29. The mercury switch 15 is operated to control the contactor switch 36 by superimposing on the mains by means of generators 30 or 33 alternating current of the requisite frequency to energize one or other of the tuned circuits containing the coils 12, 13.
