Abstract

249,304. Ridgway, A. E. March 5, 1925. Cauldrons. - A self-contained apparatus for heating heavy tars and bitumens for road making comprises a receptacle a<1> for heated tar, a hood f for the solid cold material and means for pumping or spraying the heated tar over the solid material to melt it and facilitate its flow into the receptacle. In the apparatus shown, the tar or like material heated in a primary receiving compartment a<1> passes over a weir h into one or more supply compartments a<2> formed by partitions such as a<3>. Above the compartments a<2> is the roof-shaped hood f which receives the solid material through doors d<1>. Two pumps (not shown) communicate by siphon pipes k, k<1> with a perforated well tube k<2> in the supply compartment, one pump serving to feed the external spray pipes and the other delivering hot tar through pipes l, l<1> over the solid material on the hood f, the molten material flowing through holes f<1> back to the receiver a<1>. Tar is withdrawn for grouting purposes, through a cock i and insulated pipe i<1>. Tar barrels are hoisted on to rollers c' over the receiver a<1> by a jib crane x, tackle e, and winding drums e<2>. Transverse bars c serve to support a mass of bitumen so that it is partly immersed in the receiver a<1>.
