Indicators actuated by pressure of head of liquid. - In a device for indicating the liquid level in the fuel tank of a motor vehicle by measuring the air pressure in a tube dipping into the liquid, air is automatically introduced into the tube by a pump operated by pressure, variations in the engine manifold. An open-ended tube 3 extends to the bottom of the tank 1 and communicates with a manometer 2 which indicates the air pressure and therefore the height of liquid in the tank. The tube 3 is connected by pipes 17, 13 to the compartment b in a casing 10, separated by a diaphragm 9 from a compartment a which is connected to the intake manifold 12 of the engine. The variations in pressure which take place periodically in the manifold 12 cause movements of the diaphragm 9 and consequent intake of air through the valve 14 and expulsion through the valve 16 into the pipe 3. A modified form of check valve arrangement is described in which liquid seals are employed in place of valves, and another modification comprises a piston and cylinder in place of the chamber 10. In the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), the piston may be operated alternatively by the brake or clutch pedal, starter handle, gear change lever or the like. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
