Abstract

218,932. Badin, R. E. Jan. 14, 1924. Indicators actuated by pressure of head of liquid.-The level of liquid in a tank is indicated at a distance by measuring the. pressure required to force air through a pipe opening at the bottom of the tank, the air and liquid being separated by a flexible diaphragm. The tank 9, Fig. 3, contains a capsule 12 having a diaphragm 11, which communicates through openings 13 and pipes 15, with a compressed air reservoir 17. The air pressure in the capsule 12 is measured by a gauge 20. The diaphragm carries a valve 21 which controls a pipe 22 leading to the atmosphere, so that the valve opens when the air pressure is equal to the pressure of the liquid on the diaphragm. Fig. 4 shows the application to a tank containing liquid under pressure. The diaphragm 26 is subjected on one side to the pressure of the liquid in the tank 23, and on the other side to the pressure of compressed air supplied by a pump 28 through a pipe 29 and conduit 31. The diaphragm carries a valve 36 controlling a conduit 37 which communicates through a pipe 40 with the space above the liquid in the tank. Branch pipes 33, 42 lead from the two sides of the valve 36 to a manometer 34, so that the internal pressure in the tank is eliminated since the manometer measures the difference of pressures. In the case of a liquid fuel tank for an aeroplane in which the pressure on the liquid is obtained by means of an air intake facing the direction of motion, a similar and adjacent air intake mav be connected to the opposite side of the valve 36.
