Abstract
248,149. Thomson, R. Jan. 26, 1925. Roofs.-Each of the rafters of the pitched portions of a roof is carried at a point remote from its lower end by a horizontal framework, preferably of cantilever form, which is carried by chimney stacks, party walls, partitions, beams, or other available supports within the building, so that outward thrust on the external walls is avoided and tie-beams may be dispensed with. In semidetached houses, Figs. 1 and 2, the framework consists of four main members 1 - - 4, of which the members 3, 4 act as double-arm contilevers, resting upon a ledge 8 provided on each chimney 5, and strengthened by struts 9 which are supported by channel-iron members 10 carried by the chimneys. Each member 1, 2 is carried by a party wall 7, and the ends of the member 1 are carried by one pair of the cantilever arms 3, 4. and the other member 2 is supported by a partition 11 and carries the longer pair of cantilever arms 3, 4. Joists 12 for the flat part 13 of the roof are carried by the members 1, 2. The rafters 14 of the back and front pitched portions of the roof are hinged to the joists 12 by bolts 16. The rafters 17 of the side pitched portions are notched to engage the members 3, 4, to which they are nailed. Where chimney stacks are not available, the ends of the members 1, 2, which bear upon the party wall 5, may be supported by members borne by partitions. The rafters 14 may be connected by members 22, serving as ceiling joists. All the rafters are bolted or nailed to the framework 1 - - 4. For a detached house, a beam 3, Fig. 5, rests at a point intermediate of its length on a ledge 8 of a chimney stack 5, and its two projecting parts form cantilevers, which are strengthened by struts 9. The beam 3 supports the opposed rafters 14, which are hinged together at their upper ends and may be connected by members 22 serving as ceiling joists. In all cases, the lower ends of the rafters 14 rest upon supports 19 bearing on wall plates 20. The members 1, 2 may be of steel. Specification 216,977, [Class 20 (i), Buildings and structures, Kinds &c. of], is referred to.
