Abstract
247,700. Royce, F. H. Dec. 22, 1924. Magnetos, driving. - The magneto of an internal-combustion engine is provided with means actuatable from the end of the shaft remote from the driving pinion for effecting engagement between the pinion and the shaft. The magneto a is spigotted to the timing-gear case a<2> and has a hollow spindle b through which passes a rod b<3>. The pinion c is riveted to a hub c<2> screwed on to the rod, and the drive is transmitted to the rotor through a friction plate c' on the hub and a friction plate d' on a member d keyed on to the spindle. A sleeve e carrying the contact-breaker is mounted on the other end of the spindle and is held by a washer e<2> and a nut e<4>. When the nut e<4> is loosened, the spindle b can be rotated for adjustment, after which the sleeve can be held against rotation and the nut e<4> tightened for effecting engagement between the friction plates c<5>, d<3>. In a modification, an externally tapered member on the shaft engages with the internally tapered hub of the pinion. In another modification, the pinion and a member keyed to the hollow spindle are provided with cooperating radial surfaces having U-shaped serrations thereon.
