Description

1 2455809
BUILDING SYSTEM
FIELD OF INVENTION
The present invention relates to a building system or fixing system for a building or building structure, and in particular to a system for outdoor or indoor building components. The invention also relates to building components, e.g. decorative building components, fixable to a building or building structure by such a system.
BACKGROUND OF INVENTION
The building industry has undergone considerable changes in recent years. In particular, the types of materials used in the building industry have generally shifted away from natural materials such as wood and stone, and in favour of more modern materials such as glass- reinforced plastic composites. As well as being lightweight and durable, these modern materials also offer the additional advantage of avoiding the need for exploiting natural resources such as forests, quarries and mines, in order to retrieve the necessary materials.
Building components such as string courses, window heads, and window sills, are traditionally made from stone or reconstituted stone. Whilst their appearance can be aesthetically pleasing, such stone-based articles present significant disadvantages. Firstly, the high density of stone-based products renders the final articles very heavy and difficult to handle. On-site handling of such articles often requires the use of expensive and complex machinery, and also increases the likelihood of injury to builders. Secondly, stone-based articles, despite their weight, are relatively fragile.
They are prone to suffering considerable damage and/or breaking when not handled with extreme care.
An alternative to stone-based components in the modern building industry has been the use of plastic-based composites materials. These provide significant advantages such as high strength to low weight ratio, excellent durability with minimum maintenance, and lower installation costs.
Mounting of such composite articles onto a building typically involves point fixing, using of a combination of mechanical fixing and a chemical anchor.
Unfortunately, such fixing systems present a number of disadvantages. As well as requiring templates during mounting, such a fixing method also gives rise to components which are not supported over their entire length. Consequently, if one fixing point fails, this increases the stress on the next nearest fixing points, thereby also increasing their likelihood of failure.
As a result, there exists a need for a fixing system for building components such as decorative building components which is easy to use and better supports the components over their entire length.
It is an object of at least one embodiment of at least one aspect of the present invention to obviate and/or mitigate one or more disadvantages in the prior art.
It is an object of at least one embodiment of at least one aspect of the present invention to provide an improved building or fixing system for building components which reduces the need for point fixing.
It is an object of at least one embodiment of at least one aspect of the present invention to provide a method of constructing, building or finishing a building or building structure comprising using the improved building or fixing system.
It is an object of at least one embodiment of at least one aspect of the present invention to provide a building or building structure comprising the improved building or fixing system.
SUARY OP INVENTION
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a building system or fixing system or apparatus for a building or building structure, the system comprising a fixing member, a facing member or building component, e.g. decorative building component, and means for fixing the fixing member and facing member or building component together.

The system may comprise further means for fixing the fixing member to the building or building structure.
The further fixing means may comprise bolts, screws or the like extending through holes or apertures of the fixing member.
In use, the fixing member may be fixed to the building or building structure by the further fixing means.
In use, the fixing member may be fixed to an external side or face of the building or building structure, e.g. to an external side or face of a building wall.
Alternatively, the fixing member may be fixed to an internal member or part of the building or building structure, e.g. to an inner frame or inner leaf of a building wall.
