Description

SPECIFICATION Retaining device for a covering strip This invention relates to a retaining device for a covering strip, and also relates to an assembly comprising a retaining device and a covering strip.
It is known to provide a covering strip for structures, for example skirting boards are commonly provided along the lower edges of walls, and architrave is commonly provided on the frames of doors and windows.
Such covering strips are generally used to give a decorative effect and for protection at the edge of plasterwork abutting timber frames and floors.
Problems arise in retaining the covering strips in the desired position relative to the structure.
Furthermore, once the covering strip has been retained relative to the structure subsequent removal can be difficult.
It is an object of the present invention to overcome these disadvantages.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a retaining device for retaining a covering strip in position relative to a structure, comprising a member adapted to be secured to the structure, and cooperating means adapted to cooperate with the covering strip to retain the covering strip in position on the member.
Advantageously the cooperating means is adapted to permit the covering strip to slide relative to the retaining device in a direction substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the member.
Advantageously also, the cooperating means is adapted to permit the covering strip to be removed from the member.
Preferably the member is provided with at least one aperture, to facilitate securing of the member to the structure by nails or screws.
The member is conveniently an elongate strip of substantially planar configuration having a surface which can engage the structure.
Preferably the cooperating means is adapted to provide a push-fit connection between the member and the covering strip.
Desirably the cooperating means comprises a retaining formation which may extend substantially transverse to the elongate strip. Preferably the retaining formation is adapted to cooperate with a formation provided on the covering strip. The retaining formation on the member may comprise a projection, and the formation on the covering strip may be a recess shaped to correspond to the projection. The projection may be of corrugated configuration and is preferably resiliently deformable; this assists with the retaining of the covering strip.
In a preferred construction the retaining device is provided with an edging formation which defines an edge for a surface layer which may be applied to the structure.
The edging formation may be separate from the elongate strip, or may be integral therewith. When the edging formation is separate, it may include at least one aperture which can be aligned respectively with the or each aperture of the elongate strip, so that a single nail or screw can be passed through the aligned aperture or apertures of the edging formation and elongate strip. In this way a single nail or scew may serve the double purpose of securing the retaining device to the structure, and of securing the edging formation to the elongate strip.
The structure may typically be part of a building, for example a wall, a window frame or a door frame.
The covering strip may be a skirting board or architrave. When the structure comprises a wall then the covering strip would usually be a skirting board. When the structure is a door or window frame, the covering strip would usually be architrave.
According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided an assembly comprising covering means for covering at least part of a structure, retaining means for retaining the covering means in position relative to the structure and adapted to be secured to the structure, said covering and retaining means being provided with cooperating means adapted to retain the covering means on the retaining means.
Advantageously the cooperating means is adapted to permit the covering means to slide relative to the retaining means along an axis substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis or the retaining means. Advantageously also, the cooperating means enables the covering means to be removed from the retaining means.
The covering means may advantageously comprise a covering strip such as a skirting board, or architrave.
The cooperating means preferably provides a push-fit connection between the covering means and the retaining means. To this end the cooperating means may comprise a formation provided on the retaining means and a cooperating formation provided on the covering means. The formation on the retaining means may comprise a projection and the formation on the covering strip may be a recess shaped to correspond to the retaining formation.
The projection may be of corrugated configuration and is preferably resiliently deformable; this assists with the retaining of the covering strip.
With this arrangement, the application of a positive force is necessary to push the projection into the recess, and to pull the projection out of the recess. This ensures that the covering strip is effectively retained in position when the projection has been pushed into the recess.
The covering means and the retaining means may be a plastics material, and may be formed by plastics extrusion. Alternatively they may be made of any other suitable material such as wood or metal.
The retaining means may comprise a member having at least one aperture, as described above.
An edging formation as described above may also be provided.
In an alternative embodiment the recess can be provided on the retaining means and the projection can be provided on the covering means.
Reference is now made to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure lisa perspective view of an embodiment of an assembly according to the invention secured to a wall; Figure 2 is a perspective view of an alternative embodiment of an assembly according to the invention secured to a wall; Figure 3 is perspective view of the assembly shown in Figure 2 with a corner covering strip added; Figure 4 is a perspective view of the embodiment of the assembly shown in Figures 2 and 3 secured to a wall, and of a further embodiment of the assembly secured to a door frame; Figure 5 is a perspective view of the assembly shown in Figure 4 with an end covering strip added; Figure 6 is a perspective view of the embodiment of the assembly secured to a door frame shown in Figures 4 or 5, secured to another part of the door frame; and Figure 7 is a perspective view of the embodiment of the assembly shown in Figure 6 with a corner covering strip added.
In Figure 1 an assembly is illustrated which comprises covering means in the form of a covering strip 1, and retaining means in the form of a retaining device 2. The covering strip 1 is a skirting board for covering the lower part of a wall 5.
The retaining device 2 comprises an elongate planar strip 3 from which a retaining formation in the form of a projection 4 extends; the projection 4 extends substantially perpendicularly to the elongate strip 3, and is of corrugated configuration.
The retaining device 2 is secured to the wall 5 in the lower region of the wall, i.e. where it joins a floor 6.
A flange 7 extends along a lower edge 3a of the elongate strip 3 and engages the floor 6. The flange 7 assists in correct positioning of the retaining device 2.
The retaining device 2 is also provided with an edging formation 8 which is separate from the elongate strip 3, in the embodiment shown in Figure 1. The formation 8 defines a lower edge for a surface layer 9, in the form of plaster, which covers the surface of the wall 5.
The formation 8 is provided with apertures 8a (of which only one is shown) which are aligned with apertures (not shown) of the elongate strip 3. A nail or screw (not shown in Figure 1) can be passed through the apertures in order to secure the formation 8 to the elongate strip 3, and to secure the retaining device 2 to the wall 5.
The covering strip 1 includes a first panel member 10 which covers the lower edge of the wall 5. The panel member 10 includes a lower portion 10a of substantially planar configuration, and an upper portion 10b, also of substantially planar configuration but arranged at an angle to the portion 1 Oa so that is extends to and engages the surface layer 9.
The covering strip 1 includes also a second panel member 11 which is substantially planar, and arranged substantially parallel to the lower portion 1 0a of the first panel member 10; the second panel member 11 is spaced from the portion 1 Oa of the first panel member 10 by an upper spacing member 12 and a lower spacing member 13. The lower spacing member 13 engages the flange 7 and is arranged above the lowermost edge of the portion 1 Oa of the first panel member 10 by a distance equal to the thickness of the flange 7, so that the lowermost edge can engage the floor 6.
The second panel member 11 is provided with a recess 14 which can receive the projection 4 of the retaining device 2. The recess 14 is shaped to cooperate with the projection 4 so that a positive force is required to push the projection into the recess 14, and to pull the projection from the recess; this enables the covering strip 1 to be retained on or removed from the retaining device 2. The projection 4 and the recess 14 form co-operating means for retaining the covering strip 1 in position relative to the wall 5. The projection 4 is resiliently deformable which enables it to deform as it is pushed into the recess 14.
The projection 4 is positioned relative to the elongate strip 3, and the recess 14 is positioned relative to the second panel member 11 such that when the retaining device 2 is secured to the wall 5, and the covering strip 1 is retained in position, the position of the covering strip relative to the wall 5 corresponds to the required position.
The procedure for retaining the covering strip 1 in position along the wall 5 is as follows.
Firstly the retaining device 2 is secured to the wall 5 with nails or screws which are passed through the apertures of the elongate strip 3 and the formation 8.
The surface layer 9 is then applied over the surface of the wall 5 up to the egding formation 8.
Afterthe surface layer 9 has dried, the covering strip 1 is pushed onto the retaining device 2. This is achieved by aligning the recess 14 with the projection 4then pushing the covering strip 1 towards the retaining device 2 so that the projection 4 enters the recess 14. The corrugated nature of the projection 4 and the correspondingly shaped recess 14 ensure that the covering strip 1 is effectively retained in position.
When in position the covering strip 1 may be slid relative to the retaining device 2 in a direction substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the strip 3. To this end the corrugations of the projection 4 extend substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the strip 3. This isimportant because it assists with the correct alignment of the covering strip 1, and additionally facilitates movement due to thermal expansion and contraction.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 2 the assembly is similar to that shown in Figure 1, and like parts are designated with like reference numerals.
The differences between the embodiments shown in Figures 1 and 2 are as follows.
In Figure 2, the embodiment of retaining device 2 is not provided with the edging formation 8. The elongate strip 3 has apertures 15 through which nails 16 are passed to secure the elongage strip to the wall 5.
The first panel member 10 of the covering strip 2 comprises the lower portion 1 Oa and the upper portion 1 Ob which engages the surface layer 9; in this embodiment the upper portion 10b is substantially transverse to the lower portion 1 ova.
Furthermore, an intermediate portion 10c is provided which is also substantially planar, and which is arranged an angle both to the upper portion 10b and to the lower portion 10a; the intermediate portion 1 Oc connects the upper and lower portions. The second panel member 11 extends to the upper portion 1 or.
The embodiment in Figure 3 is the same as that shown in Figure 2, except that a corner covering strip la has been added. The corner covering strip la is provided with recesses (not shown) which receive projections 4 of botch the retaining devices 2 shown in Figure 2.
In Figures 4 and 5 the retaining device 2 which is secured to the wall 5, and the covering strip 1 which is retained in position relative to the wall 5, are substantially identical to the retaining device and covering strips shown in Figures 2 and 3; consequently these will not be described further.
In Figures 4 and 5 there is also shown a door frame 17 and part of a door 18.
An assembly comprising covering means in the form of a covering strip 21 and retaining means in the form of a retaining device 22 is also shown in Figures 4 and 5. The covering strip 21 is architrave for covering part of the door frame 17. The covering strip 21 is of similar construction to the covering strip 1 shown in Figures 2,3 and 4.
The retaining device 22 comprises an elongate planar strip 23 from which a retaining formation in the form of a projection 24 extends. The projection 24 is of substantially identical construction to the projection 4 shown in Figures 1,2 and 4.
The elongate strip 23 is provided with apertures 35 through which nails or screws 36 are passed to secure the retaining device 22 to the frame 17.
The covering strip 21 includes a first panel member 30 which covers part of the frame 17. The panel member 30 includes a first portion 30a of substantially planar configuration, and a second portion 30b of substantially planar configuration which extends substantially transverse to the first portion 30a. The second portion 30b extends to, and engages, the frame 17.
An intermediate portion 30c is provided which is substantially panar and which extends at an angle to both the first portion 30a and the second portion 30b and which connects the first and second portions.
The covering strip 21 also includes a second panel member 31 which is substantially planar, and is arranged substantially parallel to the first portion 30a of the first panel member 30. The second panel member 31 is spaced from the first portion 30a of the first panel member 30 by a spacing member 32, and extends to the second portion 30b of the first panel member 30.
The second panel member 31 is provided with a recess 34 which can receive the projection 24 of the retaining device 22. The recess 34 is shaped to co operate with the projection 24, so that a positive force is required to push the projection into the recess, and to pull the projection from the recess; this enables the covering strip 21 to be retained on or removed from the retaining device 22. The projection 24 and the recess 34 form co-operating means for retaining the covering strip 21 in position relative to the frame 17. When in position the covering strip 21 may be slid relative to the retaining device 22 in a direction substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the elongate strip 23.
The projection 24 is positioned relative to the elongate strip 23 and the recess 34 is positioned relative to the second panel member 31 so that when the retaining deyice 22 is secured to the frame 17, and the covering strip 21 is retained in position, the position of the covering strip relative to the frame 17 corresponds to the required position.
The procedure for retaining covering strip 21 on the frame 17 is similar to that for retaining the covering strip 1 on the wall 5.
The embodiment shown in Figure 5 is the same as that shown in Figure 4, except that an end covering strip 21a has been provided. The end covering strip 21a is provided with recesses (not shown) which receive projections 24 of the retaining device 22 shown in Figure 4.
Figures 6 and 7 show the covering strip 21 and the retaining device 22 arranged at the upper part of the frame 17 and door 18. The covering strip 21 and retaining device 22 are substantially identical to the covering strip 21 and retaining device 22 shown in Figures 4 and 5.
The embodiment shown in Figure 7 is the same as that shown in Figure 5, except that a corner covering strip 21b has been added. The corner covering strip 21b is provided with recesses (not shown) which receive projections 24 of both the retaining devices 22 shown in Figure 6.
