Abstract

Range-finders for indicating the distance of aircraft of the kind fitted with a differential gear operated by the range-setting member and by the altitude-setting member in such a manner that the motion of the planet wheel of the gear is proportional to the log. of the height. The movement of the range-setting member g<s>, operating rotating prisms d<1>, d<2> is communicated to one bevel wheel i<3> of the differential gear through spiral members h<2>, i<1>, so that the rotation of the wheel i<3> is proportional to log range. Similarly the movement in altitude of the range-finder is communicated to the other bevel wheel m<3> of the differential gear by spiral members l<2>, m<2> so that rotation of the wheel m<3> is proportional to log. sin altitude angle. The altitude is read off a drum j‹ attached to the planet wheel bearing. The spiral members are each provided with two flexible bands laid around their peripheral surfaces, one in a clockwise direction round one member and in an anti-clockwise direction round the other member, and the other band oppositely so as to ensure positive actuation of one member by the other. One of the bands may be connected to one of the spiral members by a tension spring.
