Abstract

130,074. Short, H. O. Jan. 14, 1918. Differential speed indicators.-Apparatus for indicating the rate of ascent and descent 'of aircraft by a determination of the rate of change of barometric pressure comprises a series of vacumn chambers 6, in a casing communicating with the atmosphere, the movements of which are communicated through a rack 8, pinion 9<x>, and spur gearing to a screwed shaft 1 bearing a friction disk 3 adapted to engage a clockdriven cone or disk 4. Movement of the disk 3 is communicated to a pointer 10 by a fork 15 which surrounds the hub of the disk and is connected by a pin and slot to a pivoted sector 18 engaging a pinion 19 on the indicating-shaft. The weight of the rack 8 and a plate 13 carrying the rack is balanced by light spiral springs 7 wound round supporting-posts 14. When a cone is employed, a reversing-gear is necessary to allow the device to be used to indicate the speed of descent; but in the case of the disk, the indications are given on opposite sides of the scale, as shown in Fig. 2.
