Abstract
555,824. Aircraft stalling speed indicators FERRANTI, Ltd., and CLUDERAY, E. S. April 19, 1941, No. 5081. [Class 4] For indicating the variations of the stalling speed of an aeroplane a spring-supported weight responsive to accelerations parallel to the normal axis of the aircraft is connected by linkwork, described below, and gearing to a pointer moving over a scale graduated to show air speeds. The instrument may be combined with an air speed indicator having a pointer moving over the same scale and an additional scale may be provided to indicate the values of the accelerations parallel to the normal axis. A weight 1 mounted on a spring 2 is connected by a link 5 to an arm 6 on a spindle 8 carrying a toothed quadrant 9 gearing with a pinion 10 on a sleeve carrying a pointer 12 moving over a scale, not shown. The pointer 12 is frictionally mounted so that it can be initially set to the normal stalling speed of the aeroplane. The initial inclination of the arm 6 to a perpendicular from the spindle 8 to the link 5 is greater than when the weight is subject to additional acceleration so that the square root law of response of the weight 1 to accelerations is balanced by the sine law of the arm 6 to give a substantially linear displacement over the dial. The arm 6 is connected by a link 17 to an air dash-pot 15, 16. A disc 20 marked in multiples of the acceleration due to gravity moves behind a window in the dial. A second pointer 23 is geared to a capsule 33 connected to a pitot tube to indicate actual air speeds on the same scale. An instrument without the second pointer 23 also is described.
