562,182. Indicating; altimeters. K. D. G. INSTRUMENTS, Ltd., and MACK, F. Nov. 11, 1942, No. 15968. [Classes 106 (ii) and 106 (iv)] In an indicating instrument of the kind in which toothed gear trains whose axes of rotation are fixed, drive a pointer over a scale, zero adjusting means are provided for moving an arm moved by the responsive element, bodily around the fixed axis of a transmission member, while maintaining the driving relationship of the arm with the transmission element without imparting responsive movement to the responsive element, but imparting movement to the transmission member relative to the responsive element. As shown, a sensitive altimeter comprises a battery of capsules 20 actuating a layshaft 21 through a link 24. A sector plate 13 secured to the layshaft drives a gear train, which actuates pointers 15, 16, 17 to indicate the altitude in tens of thousands, thousands a.nd hundreds of feet respectively. Barometric pressure at ground level is indicated by a circular scale 26 through a window in the dial 18. The scale 26 is rotatable by an adjusting knob 42 through shaft 3, and pinions 32, 31, 30 and 28. The pinion 32 also drives pinions 37, 38 and 41 to rotate a secondary frame 19, carrying the capsules, about the axis of the lay-shaft to adjust the zero setting. Normally the shaft 3 is held against axial movement by a grub screw 39, but for adjusting the barometric pressure scale without adjusting the zero setting of the altimeter, the grub screw is released and the shaft is slid upwards to release the pinion 37. The lay-shaft 21 is subjected to the influence of a spiral spring 6 secured to the secondary frame 19. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the capsule 43 is stationary and actuates an arm 45 on a lay-shaft 46 having a further arm 56 actuating a gear sector 47 driving a pointer 50. The lay-shaft is carried by a secondary frame 54 rotatable in a horizontal plane by the knob 42, so that the arm 56 is moved round the pivot in the gear sector 47 for zero adjustment.
