Abstract

124,606. Kemp, J. R. April 15, 1918. Clinometers.-Relates to apparatus of the universal, spherical, liquid type, and consits chiefly in the provision as the indicating element of a buoyant member, formed of two or preferably three disks rigidly secured mutually at 'rightangles and approximating in diameter to the spherical container, relatively to which it moves, upon inclination, by virtue of the inertia of the liquid whereby it is carried. The graduations upon the transparent sphere may take the form of a great circle with parallel small circles. Fig. 1 shows the construction wherein the three disks, of which two, H<1>, H<2> appear, have peripheral flanges H<4>, the material being wood or celluloid; this indicator maintains indications during inversion of an aircraft or other structure upon which the inclinometer is mounted, and is weighted to define a normal position. The spherical container is made in two halves with flanges A<1>, A<2>, secured together. Methylated spirit or an aqueous solution not readily frozen is employed as the liquid and its specific gravity is chosen to be equal to that of the indicator. Luminous paint may be employed to facilitate use at night.
