Abstract

252,159. Goerz Optische Anstalt Akt.-Ges., C. P. May 12, 1925, [Convention date]. Range-finders for use with aerial targets for determining the vertical and horizontal projections of the distances of the target from the observer are provided with two scales operated by logarithmic cams, the scales being moved one over the other in a manner similar to that of logarithmic slide rules. One of the cams is positively connected with the range prism adjusting means and the other with the device for adjusting the rangefinder in altitude. The rangefinder casing 1 carries the roller 2 by which the range is determined by operating the prisms 9, 10, through bevel wheels 4<a>, 5, 6, 8, the range being read on the drum 4. The scale 20<a> is rotated proportionally to the logarithm of the range indicated on the drum 4 by means of logarithmic cams 19, 20 actuated from the shaft 7 carrying the pinion 8 by toothed wheels 11, 12, the latter carrying a pin 13 acting on the end of a spring 14, the other end being attached to a spindle 15 rotating the cam 19. Cams 19, 20 are connected bv steel bands wound round their surfaces in opposite directions. The height of the target is read by means of a pointer or a disc 21 carrying a mark. A radially guided slide 22 on the disc forced outward by a spring 23 engages by fine teeth with the inner edge of the scale disc 20<a>, and may be disengaged by the rotation of the knob 25, having an eccentric groove engaging a pin 22<a> on the slide 22. The disc 21 is secured to the shaft 26, which is rotated by logarithmic cams 27, 28 from the bevel wheels 33, 32 when the rangefinder is elevated by rotating it in the bearing 34, in a similar manner to that by which the scale 20<a> is operated, so that rotation of the shaft 26 is proportioned to the logarithms of the sines of the angles of altitude. Additional cams and an additional disc on the shaft 26 actuated bv rotation of the rangefinder in the bearing 34 may be provided to give the horizontal projection of the target position.
