Paper bags and envelopes, making. - In a machine for making paper bags or envelopes, a web 1 of paper fed continuously and uniformly from a roll by feed rollers 7 - - 10 is gripped by a presser 13 immediately before it is cut into blanks, and the slack thus formed in the web is taken up by a plate 27 operated by cam-actuated levers &c. 28 - - 32. As soon as the presser 13 rises, one or more pairs of feed rollers 11, 12, which have a surface speed greater than that of the rollers 7 - - 10, grip the web and feed it forward quickly, the plate 27 being meanwhile turned about its pivot 26 so as to allow the web to extend in a straight line from the rollers 9, 10 to the rollers 11, 12. The intermittent action of the rollers 11, 12 may be caused by cutting away a pair of one of the rollers or by raising the roller 12 periodically by a cam-actuated lever 19. The gear-wheels connecting the rollers 11, 12 may remain in mesh when the roller 12 is raised, so that both of these rollers rotate continuously.
