Bookbinding-machines.-In machines for making multiple letter sheets &c., of the kind in which sheets are fed separately to upper and lower sets A, B, Fig. 1, of feed-rollers cooperating with feed-controlling lays and are carried by endless tapes to mechanism for securing them together by a strip of adhesive near one edge, and for perforating them near the adhesive strip, and particularly of the kind described n Specification 112,637, paper is drawn intermittentlv from a roll and cut into sheets, which are carried to the lower feed rollers B ready to enter the lower tapes at the same time as separate sheets are fed by hand to the upper tapes, the number of operators necessary being thus reduced. Paper drawn from a roll 8, over a drum 3 co-operating with pressure rolls 4, is fed forward intermittently by a chain 17 engaging a chain-wheel 14 in pawl-and-ratchet connection with the shaft of the drum 3. The chain is moved to feed the paper by a rod 19, a link 20, and a lever 21 controlled by a cam 23, the chain being returned between each feed movement by a weight 18 on it. The paper is cut off after each feed movement by an upper movable knife adjustable bv screws and co-operating with a lower fixed knife. The upper knife is raised during the feed movement of the paper by an eccentric 38 controlled through a link 36 from a cam 33 and is lowered to sever the paper by a spring 40. The paper is held during cutting by a spring-pressed pad on the upper knife. The length of sheet cut off is adjusted by adjustment of the cam 23 on the driving-shaft 24 of the machine. The shaft 24 engages a slot 26 in the cam 23, and a pin 28 on the control cam 29 of the linkage for operating the feedrollers A, B passes through a slot in the cam 23 and carries a lever 30. The lever 30 at one end 31 engages a pin on the cam 23 and at the other end carries a set-screw 32 for locking it in any position and so adjustably locking the cam 23 on the shaft 24. The cut sheets are carried to the feed rollers B by endless tapes 11 passing around loose rollers 9 and around rollers 12 fixed to the driven shaft of the rollers B. A detachable feed-table may be arranged above the tapes 11 to permit of feeding sheets to the rollers B bv hand if desired. The intermittent feed and the upper knife are maintained inoperative by depression against the action of a spring 55, Figs. 1 and 4, of the pedal 43 controlling the feed-rollers A, B, a bell-crank lever 42 then being moved by a weight 42<a> so that its end 52 engages a stud 53 and maintains the feed rollers A, B inoperative. On depression of the pedal 43, a peg 50 on a lever 47 is allowed to rise, the nose 48 of the lever 44 then projecting into the path of a projection 49 on the link 36 and maintaining the upper knife raised. A bell-crank le.ver 44 is released from a spring catch 56 on the lever 42 so that a projection 45 on the lever 44 engages a stop 46 on the link 19 to prevent return movement of the chain 14 by the weight 18 and so to maintain the feed inoperative. On release of the pedal 43, the nose 48 is raised out of the path of the projection 49 and a projection 51 on the link 36 raises the lever 44 into engagement with the catch 56.
