Abstract
The In line Package tipper consists of a set of Y frames 1 mounted on a rotatable shaft 6 which has a bearing block 4 at each end. The bearing blocks 4 are fixed to a carriage 9, which is mounted on two guide rods 5 and is free to move along these guide rods 5. One of the Y frames 1 is connected to an arm 2 by a pin 7 at one end, the other end of the arm 2 is secured to a stationary bracket 3 by a pin 8. Arm 2 is free to rotate about both pins 7 and 8. When the carriage 9 is moved shaft 6 is rotated and the Y frames 1 turn and tip the package.

IN-LINE PACKAGE TIPPER
The invention relates to a mechanism which will lift a package which is sitting on a roller conveyor, turn it on its side and set it back on the conveyor while maintaining the same centreline of movement.
Many methods are used in manufacturing to change the orientation of packages to present them correctly to labellers, bar code readers, and automated palletisers. These methods often involve a rolling motion which takes the package off sideways, requiring wider conveyors and additional means of correcting the deviation further along the conveyor system. Some methods of tipping are so violent that they cannot be used with fragile products.
The object of the invention is to lift a package, which is located with the centreline of its height on the centre of movement, turn it on to its edge and set it back on the conveyor with the centreline of its width on the centreline of movement.
All of the movements come from one prime mover, and are all mechanically linked.
The dimensions of the device will depend on the size and weight of the packages to be handled.
A typical design layout will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: FIGURE 1 shows an end view before tipping.
FIGURE 2 shows the same view partly tipped FIGURE 3 shows the same view fully tipped FIGURE 4 shows a three dimensional view As shown in Figure 1 and Figure 4 the device comprises a multiple ofY' frames I which are keyed to a shaft 6. Only one Y' frame I is connected to an arm 2 by a pin 7. Arm 2 is secured to a stationary bracket 3 by a pin 8. Arm 2 is free to rotate about both pins 7 and 8. Shaft 6 has a bearingblock 4 at each end, which, are connected to a carriage 9. Carriage 9 is mounted on two guide rods 5 and is free to move along these guide rods 5.
The package is supported on conveyor rolls 10 and the legs of the Y' frames 1 are clear of the side and bottom of the package before tipping is actuated.
The rotation of the Y' frames I is limited by the stops I 1.and 12 When the carriage 9 is moved in the direction of the arrow, the Y' frame 1 is rotated anticlockwise leaving the stop 11 and lifting the package off the conveyor rolls 10. When this action reaches the mid-point the package has slipped into the vee of the Y' frame as shown in Figure 2. On completion of the movement the Y' frames 1 reach stop 12 having set the package down on its side as shown in Figure 3 with the centre of the height on the centre of movement.
Claims (9)
1. A device which lifts and turns a package in one movement while maintaining the centre of the package on the centre of movement.
2. A device as claimed in Claim 1 where either one or both legs of the Y' frames are rollers.
3. A device as claimed in Claim 1 where the guide rods are replaced by or are in addition to helical screws to provide the primary movement.
4. A device as claimed in Claim I where the prime mover is a Fluid actuator.
5. A device as claimed in Claim I where the prime mover is a Chain.
6. A device as claimed in Claim 1 where the prime mover is a Belt.
7. A device as claimed in Claim 1 where the prime mover is a Rack and pinion.
8. A device as claimed in Claim 1 where the prime mover is an Electricf Fluid Motor.
9. A device substantially as herein described above and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
