Abstract
The heat of combustion of substances other than ordinary fuels, one or more of which substances are in the gaseous state, is used to raise the temperature of a liquid or suspension by effecting the combination in a chamber or burner the nozzle of which is immersed in the liquid or suspension. The latter may also react with the substance produced by the combination or the product may be utilized in a subsequent process. The burner employed may be of the type described in Specification 242,680, [Class 75 (i), Burners &c.]. Sulphur dioxide produced by burning sulphur or sulphuretted hydrogen may be employed for the production and concentration of solutions of sulphites or bisulphites. For example, the sulphur dioxide may be passed into a suspension of lime. The sulphur dioxide may also be utilized in the process described in Specification 239,558, whereby zinc and lead sulphites and zinc chloride are obtained.
