Abstract

242,136. Mitchell, J. G., and Leslie, W. Feb. 19, 1925. Double and multiple hinges for doors, windows and other articles comprising two leaf members with an intermediate member which remains stationary when the door is opened in one direction and moves when the door is opened in the other direction, are provided with a transversely-disposed casing containing a spring or other controlling device which acts on the outer hinge members in a direction perpendicular to their axes. The control device may be a coiled spring, a solid piston unit, or both. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3<a>, one or more casing members 5 each containing a spring member 10 are hingedly connected about the pins 6, 7 to the plates 3, 4 secured respectively to the door 1 and frarne 2. In addition to the projections 3<a>, 4<a>, 5<a> on the hinge members engaged by the pins 6, 7, cammembers 3b, 4b of the members 3, 4, engage pistons 8, 9 between which are springs 10. When the door is opened to one side, as shown, the projections 4b press on the pistons 8 so that the casing 5 is locked to the butt plate on the door. Instead of the coil springs 10, solid or hollow pistons 12, Fig. 6, may be used for the hinges, with cam members 13. Hinges may be made up of both spring and solid piston units.
