To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, OSCAR KATZEN- BERGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Single-Acting Lavatory- Hinge, of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact description.
This invention r'elates to improvements 7 in spring hinges and particularly to what are commonly known as lavatory hinges, and has for an object to provide an improved structure which may be quickly and easily adjusted so as to hold the door closed or to hold the door open.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hinge for holding the door either open or closed and causing the spring to.
act in the same manner in both instances, such structure being adapted for use as a lavatory hinge or as a hinge for any other purpose desired.
In carrying out the objects of the inven-v tion, the various parts of the hinge, except the bearing members, are formed from stampings which are bent soas to present barrel portions and leaves. The leaves are formed so as to be readily secured to a lavatory door and to a marble slab or other support.

Referring to the accompanying drawings by numeral, l-indicates a door and 2 a wall of any desired construction, such, for instance, as a marble slab. Associated with the door 1 and the wall 2 is a hinge, which hinge is provided with leaves 3 and 4. The leaf 3 may be of any suitable construction as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, through which screws or other fastening means are passed. The leaf 4 is provided with a plate 10 coacting with the clamping plate 6, this plate, however, being integral with the leaf 4.

It will be noted that the washer 18 is provided with a recessed portion which produces a chamber 23 and that the head of the pin 21 is arranged in this chamber and contacts with an extension 24 projecting'from the ring 16/ The extension 24 is provided with a pin 25 which is adapted to act against the pin 21 when the stop 26 has been removed from the ring 16 and inserted into the ring 17. The stop orpressure pin26 is designed to be used in the ring 16 when the spring 20 urges the leaves together, and usedin the ring 17 when the spring 20 urges the leaves apart. The construction of the ring 17 and washer 19 is similar to the ring 16 and washer l8 and therefore willneed no additional de scription, the pin-21 fitting into a suitable notch 22. r
As shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the pin 25 is in engagementwith the pin'2l whereby motion is transmitted from the eX- tension 24 to the pin 21 and thence to the barrel 15. When the movement is being transmitted from the spring 20 through the pin 21 to the barrel 15, the pressure pin or stop 26 is arranged in one of the apertures 16 and is pressing against the raised porshown in Fig.2, the bearing washer 18 is I provided with a pin 21 fitting into a notch tion or projection 11. This will cause the hinge to close. WVhen it is desired to cause the hinge to open, as shown in Figs. 4 and 8 the pin 26 is removed from the ring 16 which is thereby free so that the pin 25 will move around and press against the pin 21,
The pressure pin 26 is then placed inthe ring 17, it having been first rotated so as to bring the spring under tension. lVhen the pressure pin 26 is arranged in this manner, the pin will be pressing against the pin 21, and the pressure pin 26 will be pressing against the raised portion or projection 12, as shown in'Fig. 8. By this construction and arrangement it is not necessary to take the hinge apart when reversing the action of the spring 20. This spring is connected with the extensions 24 and 24: by having the ends arranged in suitable slots as shown in Figs. 3 and 7, but the hinge may be reversed by merely transferring the pressure pin 26. from one end of the hinge to the other, the adjusting means, of course, being properly adjusted for giving the desired tension to the spring. As only one removable pin, as for instancethe pin 26, is provided, a mistake, therefore, cannot be made. In order that the various parts may be properly held in alinement, apertures are provided in the ears or barrel sections 13 and 14 and through the rings 16 and 17 and their extensions for accommodating a pintle 27.
In the drawings an embodiment of the invention has been shown wherein the hinge is provided with leaves expressly adapted for lavatories, but it is evident that leaves may be provided adapted for other purposes so that the hinge could be used as a lavatory hinge, a jamb hinge, or other form of hlnge,
without departing from the spirit of the invention and without disturbing the proper operation of the adjustable parts shown more or less in detail in Fig. 2. 7
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent 1. In a spring hinge, a pair of leaves, one of said leaves being formed with turned over ears and the other of said leaves being formed with a barrel, an adjusting ring arranged at each end of said barrel, a pintle for connecting the various parts together, a spring arranged in said barrel connected with said adjusting rings, a pin for connecting either of said adjusting rings with one of said leaves, and automatically acting means for connecting said adjusting rings with either of said leaves, said automatically acting means acting in opposition to said pin, whereby said leaves when moved will act against said spring, said spring acting to open the leaves when the pin is in one of said rings and close the leaves when in the other of said rings.

In a spring hinge, a pair of leaves, one of said leaves being formed with turned over ears and the other of said leaves being formed with a barrel, said barrel being arranged between said ears, a rotatingadjusting ring arranged at each end of said barrel, said rings being arranged between the ends of said barrels and said turned over ears, means for transmitting strain from said rings to said barrel, a single pin adapted to be positioned in either the top or bottom adjusting rings at will for transmitting strain from said adjusting rings to the leaf having turned over ears, said pin transmitting the strain in different directions according to the particular ring with which it is associated, and a spring connecting said adjusting rings.

In a spring hinge of the character described, a pair of leaves, one of said leaves being formed with a barrel having a pair of apertures therein and the other of said leaves being formed with a pair of turned over ears adapted to be arranged adjacent the ends of said barrel, an adjusting ring arranged adjacent each of said ears provided with a plurality of apertures, a spring arranged in said barrel and connected with said adjusting rings, a pintle'extending through said ears and barrel and also through said adjusting rings, a bearing member at each end of said barrel, said bearing member being provided with a pin extending into the apertures in said barrel, a pin carried by each of said rings arranged to engage the pins in said bearing members at different times, and a tension pin adapted to be inserted into any of the apertures in either of said adjusting rings according to the direction in which said spring is to act, said tension pin being designed to engage the leaf carrying said ears.
