FRANK SGHWARZ, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DOOR-HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed August 21, 1909.
Patented May 3, 1910. Serial No. 513,983.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, FRANK SOHWARZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in door hin es and particularly refers to the combination of a door hinge and a door stop.
One of the objects of the'invention is the construction of a door hinge forming a stepped spring stop for the door.
Another object of the invention is the construction of a hinge having a rack thereon and a spring arm engaging with said rack whereby the door to which the hinge is connected can be held at different points of its movement. a
With the above and other objects in view the invention relates to improvements in door hinges consisting in certain combina tions, constructions and arrangements of parts, clearly described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the door hinge, Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of a hinge part, Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of a hinge part, Fig. 4:is a transverse sectional view of the hinge, and Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of the hinge.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention 1 denotes a hinge member or Fig. 3, and is provided with laterally disposed pintle supporting extensions or arms 2 and 3, which are located on opposite ends thereof. The central portion l of the hinge member 1 is provided with openings 5 for screws or other devices and with a longitudinally disposed spring tongue 6, which is bifurcated at 7.
The extension or arm 2 is formed with an arcuate rack 8 and with an o ening 9. The extension or. arm 3 is formed with a recess 10, diagonally disposed thereon with relation to the central rear side thereof. A second hinge member 11 is secured by a connecting pintle 12 to the'member 1, said member 11 being formed with extensions or arms on its opposite ends like the arms or extensions on the hinge member 1. The arm'2 of the hinge mempintle supporting body which is formed from a blank as shown iii part 4, and located on the racks. 1
her 11 is disposed against the lower side of the hinge arm 3 of the member 1, and the arm 3 of said member 11 is dis osed under the arm 2 of the hinge meml er 1. The member 11 is also provided with a spring arm 6, like that of the spring arm of the member 1, and also with openings'5.
A spring stop member or rod 13 is secured to the arm or extension 2, with its upper end locatedin the opening 9 and its lower end engaging the rack 8 of the member 11, the rod 13 being held against the rack by the spring arm 6, as shown in section in Fig. 5. The recess 10 of the arm 3 of the member 11 engages the rod 13 at 14:. On the member 11 a second rod 15 is located. This rod is secured in an opening in the arm 2, said rod extending diagonally upward to engage the rack 8 of the arm 2, of the member 1, and engagin the spring arm 6, which serves to norma ly hold the same in engagement with therack 8. The arm 15 engages the recess 10 of the arm 3 at 16.
When the door to which the hinge is attached is moved the rods 13 and 15 of the members 1 and 11 will be moved into engagement with different teeth of the racks 8 and 8, and should it be desired to fix the door at any point this'will be accomplished by the spring rods 13 and 15 engaging with said racks 8 and 8. Should the rods 13 and 15 become worn out so as to render poor service they may be easily replaced by removing the same from the arms to which they are connected. Should it be desired to dispense with the spring stop rods 13 and 15 in order that the rarily used as an ordinary hinge the rods can be removed from the end arms.
Having described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent,-
- 1. In combination, a door hinge comprising two hinge members pivotally connected together, one of said members having an arm, said arm being rovided with a rack,
hinge may be tempoand a spring rod earned-by the othermember engaging with the rack.
2. In combination, a door hin ing two hinged members, each 0 said members being provided with a rack, and spring rods carried by the members engaging the e comprise comprising two hinged members, one o bers having an arm formed with a rack, and a rod carried by the other member engaging with. said rack.
In combination, a door hinge comprising two hin ed members, one of said members being 'ormed with an arm having a rack thereon, a rod carried by the other member engaging With said rack, and a spring arm carried by said last member engaging the rod.
5. In combination, a door hinge member eomprisin a central portion and two end laterally isposed arms, one of said arms being provided with a rack formed thereon, a spring arm formed with a bifurcated end arranged on the eentral part of said memher, a second hinge member having a central part and two laterally disposed end arms,
a pintle connecting the end arms of the members, said second member having a sprin arm located on its central part and a rae on one of its end arms, and rods seeumed to the members engaging the racks of the end arms.
In testimon whereof I afi'ix my signature, in presence o two witnesses.
FRANK SCHWARZ. 'Witnesses:
OTTO J. LORENZ, F. SOHUSTER.
