Abstract

241,039. Gayer, E. C. Oct. 28, 1924. Variable-speed gearing comprises an epicyclic train q, r, s, t, Fig. 1, controlled by a fluidpressure clutch, which varies the speed automatically in accordance with the load, and which comprises auxiliary plungers n, Fig. 2, for maintaining the fluid pressure. The sun gears q, t are secured to driving and driven members a, c respectively. The planet gears r, s are carried by a revoluble frame d, which carries four pistons e‹ arranged in two pairs between which fluid is exchanged through a valve i when the frame d slips relatively to a surrounding eccentric o upon the shaft a or the shaft c. The valve plunger i is yieldingly held so as to close, a port k by a governor i, Fig. 1, and a spring m<1>, or by the latter alone. A chamber l, Fig. 5, communicates by a duct l<2> with the port k, and when the liquid pressure falls a control plunger m is thrust to the left by the spring m<1>. This through a lever p<2> thrusts in a stop valve p<1> and allows the auxiliary plungers n to draw liquid through a pipe m<5> dipping into a sump in a fixed casing b along a passage p, and to discharge it through a passage l<1> to the chamber l. As the pressure there and under the pistons e<o> is replenished, the plunger m is returned to the right, closing the valve p<1>.
