Abstract

240,516. Snow, C. S. H., and N.I.C.E., Ltd. June 4, 1924. Valves; regulating.-In a cross-connected engine, the hollow pistons c, c<1> of two diameters are closed at their lower ends to form, with the large diameter cylinders a, a<1>, pump chambers for the mixture. The admission to the two pump chambers is controlled by two valves n, n<1>, Fig. 2. in a casing attached to the side of the cylinders. The mixture enters this casing at the central chamber and passes alternatively by one or other valve to a port m<2>, or m<3> which communicates with one. or other of the ports a<2>, a<3>, Fig. 1 in the cylinder walls. The movement of the valves is limited by adjustable stops m<7>, the valves carrying cushions n<8>. Connected beat valves may be used instead of the slide valves shown, or two independent beat valves spring controlled may be used. A by-pass m<10> with a regulating-tap m<12> is used to adjust the amount of charge drawn into the pump chambers.
