Abstract

A solvent for nitrocellose, to form varnishes &c. comprises ethylene-glycol monoethylether OH : CH2 . CH2OC2H5 with or without a non-solvent diluent such as a benzene or petroleum hydrocarbon, or an acyclic alcohol or a mixture of such diluents. Specified diluents are benzene, toluene, xylene, gasoline, and ethyl, propyl, butyl, and amyl alcohols. The glycol ethylether may be added to a solution of nitrocellulose in ordinary solvents, such as acetic acid esters of acyclic alcohols, together with resins, oils, and camphor, tricresyl phosphate, or the like, with or without pigments. In examples, a mixture of nitrocellulose and glycerine-resinester is dissolved in the glycol ethylether and a mixture of diluents, with the optional addition of zinc oxide, castor oil, and camphor.
