Abstract

In coating-compositions of the kind described in the parent Specification and consisting of resin, gum, drying oil, nitrocellulose or similar film-forming materials dissolved in a hydroformed solvent formed by destructive hydrogenation of hydrocarbons in the vapour phase, the hydroformed solvent used has a flash point above 27 DEG C. The solvents may be formed from crude hydrocarbons, cracked gas oils, kerosene or hydrocarbons obtained by extracting petroleum with phenol or liquid sulphur dioxide. Hydrocarbons obtained from naphthenic and Californian crudes are especially suitable. After hydrogenation the hydroformed solvent is washed with sulphuric acid, soda and water and is then p distilled to form fractions of from 200 to 315 DEG C. boiling range. These solvents have a high kauri-butanol value and may be mixed with or replace coal tar naphtha, xylol, dipentane, benzene, or turpentine in the preparation of japans, paints, varnishes or lacquers; or used in admixture with aliphatic alcohols, ketones fatty acid esters, such as secondary amyl, butyl or isopropyl alcohols or acetates, to form a vehicle for pyroxylin or other cellulose derivatives, phenolformaldehyde or glyptal resins, gum dammar and similar resins together with plasticisers such as blown castor oil, and pigments.ALSO:In coating-compositions of the kind described in the parent Specification and consisting of nitrocellulose or other film-forming material dissolved in a hydroformed solvent obtained by destructive hydrogenation of hydrocarbons in the vapour phase, the hydroformed solvent used has a flash point above 27 DEG C.
