Abstract

Coating-compositions are made by dissolving a resin, gum, drying oil, nitrocellulose or other film-forming material in a vehicle consisting of a hydroformed solvent made by destructive hydrogenation in the vapour phase of a hydrocarbon. The solvents are made by treating hydrocarbons boiling below 650 DEG F. in vapour phase with hydrogen at 930--1050 DEG F. under a pressure of preferably 50--200 atmospheres and in the presence of a catalyst consisting of the oxides or sulphides of metals in the VI group mixed with alkaline earth oxides as promoters. The resulting hydroformed oils are distilled to yield the desired fraction boiling about 122--320 DEG F. The hydrocarbons treated may consist of petroleum distillates such as gas or burning oils from California or naphthenic base crude oils, or oils derived by extracting distillates with sulphur dioxide, or phenol. The hydroformed solvents may be mixed with or replace benzene, toluene, xylene or turpentine in paints, varnishes or lacquers; or in admixtures with aliphatic ketones, alcohols such as amyl, butyl, and isopropyl alcohol, or their esters to form a vehicle for cellulose ester lacquers. For examples, a lacquer is prepared by dissolving nitrocellulose in a vehicle consisting of hydroformed solvent, butyl acetate, butyl alcohol, ethyl acetate and dibutyl phthalate and/or castor oil. Ester gum or phthalic-glyceride resins may be added. A varnish is made by mixing gum dammar or kauri gum, rosin, linseed oil, and tung oil with lime, lead oxide and hydroformed solvent. Turpentine and pigments may be added.
