Abstract
Synthetic resins for use in lacquers, varnishes and various coating compositions are prepared by reacting fumaric acid-conjugated acyclic diene adducts with at least one polyhydric organic compound containing two or more hydroxyl groups attached to different carbon atoms in an open chain. The conjugated acylic diene may be butadiene, piperylene, isoprene, or an isoprene-piperylene mixture, and examples of the polyhydric organic compound are ethylene glycol, butylene glycol, diethylene glycol, tetraethylene glycol, glycerol, polyglycerols, glycerol monomethyl ether, a -glycerol phenyl ether, glycerol furfuryl ether, pentaerythritol, sorbitol and mannitol. Modifiers may be added, such as fatty oil mono- and di-glycerides, saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, saturated and unsaturated polycarboxylic acids, natural or artificial resins such as ureaand melamine-formaldehyde resins and particularly alkylated urea and melamine resins, drying oils and non-drying oils. Catalysts such as benzene sulphuric acid, naphthylamine sulphuric acid, cobalt linoleate, lead oleate, aluminium stearate or silica gel or retarders such as naphthalene or boric acid may be employed. The resins are soluble in benzene, toluene, xylene, ethyl benzene, naphtha, carbon tetrachloride and other hydrocarbon solvents. The preparations of adducts of fumaric acid with an isoprene-piperylene mixture, isoprene, allo-ocimene and butadiene are described. In the examples, resins are made from (1) an isoprene-fumaric acid adduct, refined linseed monoglyceride and glycerol; (2) isoprene-fumaric acid adduct, refined linseed mono glyceride, glycerol and fumaric acid; (3) isoprene-fumaric acid adduct, linseed acids and pentaerythritol; (4) isoprene-fumaric acid adduct, refined castor oil, glycerine, soya fatty acids; (5) phthalic anhydride, isoprene-fumaric acid adduct, refined castor oil, soya fatty acids and glycerine; (6) the resin from example 1, butylated urea-formaldehyde resin and cobalt naphthenate.
