Abstract
Oil-soluble heat-hardening resins are produced from phenols by reacting with an aldehyde in the presence of a mild acid catalyst in the presence of a completely volatile non-gumforming solvent selected from the class of monohydric aliphatic alcohols and mononuclear aromatic hydrocarbons. Suitable catalysts include zinc or copper acetate or boric acid. Suitable solvents include di-isopropyl carbinol, iso-propyl carbinol, iso-butyl carbinol, amyl carbinol, iso-amylcarbinol, toluene, benzene and xylene. The resin solutions obtained may be combined with drying oils, semi-drying oils, cellulose derivatives (ethylcellulose, nitrocellulose or benzylcellulose), natural or synthetic resins such as rosin, kauri, vinyl resins, other phenol-aldehyde resins, acrylic or methacrylic acid ester polymers, oil-modified polyhydric alcohol - polybasic acid resins, hydrogenated natural and synthetic resins, hydrogenated phenol-aldehyde resins, hydrogenated rosin, hydrogenated rosin-modified phenol-aldehyde resins, hydrogenated ester gums, pigments, fillers, driers or solvents. The products may be used in the manufacture of coating, impregnating, sizing, moulding and adhesive compositions. In examples: (1) phenol and paraformaldehyde are condensed in the presence of ethyl alcohol, butyl alcohol, diethyl carbinol 2 - methylpentanol - 1, 2.4 - dimethylpentanol 3 and di iso-propylcarbinol as solvents and zinc acetate or boric acid as catalyst, the product being worked up if desired with chinawood or castor oil to yield coating compositions; (8) o-cresol, paraformaldehyde, di-iso propylcarbinol and zinc acetate are condensed.
