Abstract

Balances, balance springs, and balance regulators; escapements. - Clockwork projectile fuzes are made with dead-beat escapements in which the axis 7 of the balance and the axis 2 of the escapement wheel 5 are at right angles to one another, and in which each rest is determined by the contact of the point of a, tooth of the escapement wheel on a shoulder 6 secured to the shaft 7 of the balance. As shown, the balance is connected by a bevel gear 15, 17 to a transverse spindle 18 attached to a coil spring 21 transversely disposed, and mounted and regulated as described in Specification 235,841. The balance comprises weights 13 at the end of arms 12, which are supported against inertia at the moment of discharge by a fixed plate. 14. The spindle 7 of the balance is in the axis of the fuze, and the spindle 2 of the escapement is disposed transversely; but this arrangement may be reversed. The escapement, Fig. 2, is a double wheel of the " Garnier " type, in which the impulses are given to shoulders 6 by the inclines of the teeth of the wheel 5; to facilitate the release, of the teeth, the shoulder 6 is slightly inclined at 9 towards its end. The escapement, Figs. 8 and 9, has a single wheel 40, the teeth of which after resting on a shoulder 41 on the spindle 7 escape through a gap 43 and strike a wedge 42 driving the spindle alternately in one direction and the other.
